Rundāle Palace

Rundāle Palace is the most significant baroque palace in Latvia. It is located in Rundāle municipality Pilsrundāle. The palace was designed by the Italian architect Francesco Rastrelli working in the Russian Empire and built from 1736 to 1768 as the summer residence of the Duke of Courland Ernst Johann Biron.

Rundāle Palace

Rundāle Palace was built for the Duke of Courland Ernst Johann Biron by the design of the architect F.B. Rastrelli in two periods - from 1736 to 1740 and from 1764 to 1768. Most of the interiors were created by the sculptor J.M. Graf and painters F.Martini and K.Cuki. In the East wing there are several representation areas open for visitors - the Golden Hall, the White Hall and the Large Gallery. The central part of the building hold the Duke’s apartments - parlours and private apartments, while the West wing includes the apartments of the Duchess that have been fully renovated. The exhibition halls showcases applied arts, fine arts and cultural exhibits, the castle also hosts the Early Music Festival and classical music concerts. The guests can also visit the French style regular park with a rose garden, the Green Theatre, decorative parterres and a fountain. During summers, a Garden party is hosted in the park.

VISIT THE RUNDALE PALACE: 

  • Nowadays there are various art exhibitions, social events and other cultural events organized in the territory of Rundāle palace ensemble.
  • You cannot imagine a baroque palace without a French garden - architectural arrangements of flower beds that symbolically declare the victory of art over nature. The park stretches to the South of the palace and the architect Rastrelli designed it at the same time as the palace building. The park and stables are surrounded by a channel.
  • The design intended three fountains in the front of the palace but in the 18th century, they were replaced by pools. Now the central pool with a fountain according to the Rastrelli’s design is surrounded by decorative parterres including clipped boxwood shrubs, brick and white marble chippings and lawns.
  • The rose garden on both sides of the ornamental parterre takes up about 1ha. Originally it was intended to be a historical rose garden but over time it evolved into a rose museum, also showcasing the achievement of modern rose breeders. The rose collection is grouped into 44 smaller sections.
  • The visitors can see exhibitions on the construction of the Rundāle Palace, the descendants of the family of the Duke and 17-18th-century textiles and costumes.
  • Since 2012, there is a permanent exhibition on the ground floor of the palace “From Gothic to Art Nouveau” showcasing the development of European and Latvian decorative arts from the 15th to 20th century.
